HIKES AND BIKES AND BIOLOGY SOMETIMES

June Lake

Getting Higher

After a long winter avoiding snowy roads, we decided to head for higher ground.

The change of pace was great and Mt. Saint Helens is always amazing (even when you can’t see it). We tried to get to Chocolate Falls, but ran into a couple of snow fields on top of boulder fields. Punching a foot through the snow seemed like a good way to get hurt and we already had to do a bouldery move to climb out of a washout. It seemed like enough risk on top of risk.

I don’t know how busy this hike is in the summer, but this time of year, we saw no one else. It’s likely a good family hike up to the lake. If you want to go beyond that, there are large boulder fields to contend with. It’s certainly worth hiking up to see the boulder fields though.
