A ‘Sharpe’ Distinction

THE YEAR IS 1931 …

Prohibition is at a height, and the National Committee for Modification of the Volstead Act is formed to work for the repeal of prohibition in the United States. The president is Herbert Hoover. The city is New York. The stock market crash of 1929 is still causing large scale unemployment and financial insecurity across the country. Crime is at a peak.

Louie Hutch, a known member of the Sharpe ‘family’ - a loosely related crime family specialising in liquor trade is found dead on the evening of Friday January 30th with a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Each suspect is invited to a cocktail party at the Sharpe’s speakeasy to determine between them the true culprit. But beware, not everyone is who they seem.

There are ten suspects, ranging from his very own ‘family’, rival gangster groups, and ‘respectable’ law enforcement. Work through the night to uncover Louie’s murderer, and why he was killed. You may lie, bribe, scheme, collude or snoop your way through the game. To play this game you are on your own to make or break relationships, and complete your own goals.

Recommended Number of Players?

This game was written for exactly 10 players, however we have since expanded this to 12 players. We recommend organising your game for 12 people to play - that way if someone doesn’t show up you still have at least 10 core players to ensure the game runs smoothly. Any more players, and people are welcome to join in and invent their own characters in the universe. The puzzle is open to solve by everyone.

Recommended Gender Distribution?

The 10-player version of A ‘Sharpe’ Distinction was written for 5 identifying males, 4 identifying females, with 1 non-gendered character. The expansion pack adds 2 identifying females. Whilst the illustrations may suggest a gender role for a certain character, they are artistic representations only. Any of the characters can be played by someone of any gender identity, and we are more than happy to resend the files, abilities, and character cards with neutral gender pronouns so that your guests feel comfortable in their role.

Age Rating / Content Rating?

The plot contains themes of murder (obviously!), violence & substance abuse. The plot is generally suitable for ages 18+, however we recommend playing this in a group over your country’s legal drinking age due to the speakeasy setting.

DISCLAIMER: SOME CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS SUGGEST CONCEALED FIREARMS AND/OR WEAPONS. THIS IS ONLY FOR FUN AND ABSOLUTELY NOT A REQUIREMENT. NO MATTER YOUR COUNTRY’S LOCAL LAWS, PLEASE DO NOT CARRY ANY ACTUAL OR REALISTIC REPRESENTATIONS OF WEAPONS.

Setting Up Your Party

As this is set in a New York speakeasy in the 1930s, this is your opportunity to glam up in pearls and a shimmering flapper dress. Our recommended setup is an ‘open-bar’ style mix n mingle party. You’ll want to recreate a cocktail party in a private bar. See our Pinterest for decor inspiration, and our Spotify for playlist inspiration.
